January is not just an enrollment moment - it’s a head of school leadership moment.

By this point in the cycle, enrollment numbers are coming into focus. Heads who lead in this moment do four things consistently.

First, they ensure their enrollment director is prepared, supported, and trusted when the numbers are iffy and especially when trustees have tough questions at the January Board meeting.

Second, they frame the conversation clearly: what the numbers show, what’s being done, and what risks remain.

Third, they keep the board focused on strategy, not anxiety-driven tactics. Boards take their cues from the Head. In January, those cues matter more than usual. Having sat in both seats, I can guarantee your enrollment director will be grateful for support from the school head in this regard.

Fourth, when the numbers are strong, Heads still play a critical role. Meet with the entire admission office and let them know how grateful you are. Then encourage them in the strongest terms possible to not let their foot off the gas. Those same talented candidates in your pool are being recruited heavily by other remarkable schools, so start strong and finish stronger.

January is when experience matters most. If it’s helpful to compare notes with someone who’s sat in both seats, I’m always glad to listen.
